MRS. EMMA E. BOULWARE
MRS. EMMA E. BOULWARE.--A
successful business woman who is conducting a ranch of two hundred fifty-four
acres three miles southeast of Biggs, Butte County, is Mrs. Emma E. Boulware, a native daughter of California. Her father was
the late T. C. Howard, born in Pennsylvania, and who came to California in the
early sixties and mined for gold at Pea Vine, later known as Merrimac. After
Mr. Howard decided to make this state his home, he met and married Martha Sligar, and set about to make a comfortable home. He took
up a homestead near the present site of Biggs and for many years successfully
farmed. Three children came to bless their union: Emma E., of this review;
Frank F., and John J., who with their mother, now aged over seventy years, are
living in the town of Biggs.
Emma E. and her brothers grew to maturity
on their father’s ranch and attended the public schools of the locality. When
she was twenty-one she was united in marriage with Broderick De Kalb Boulware, a son of William Thomas, and a grandson of Philip
Boulware, both born in Pike County, Ill., of French
ancestry. They came to California in 1856 and settled in Butte County where
members of the family have lived ever since. Of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs.
Broderick Boulware five children were born: Irene D.,
married Charles S. Kennedy and they reside in Oakland and have two
children, James B., and Inez G.; Homer E., operating the home farm near
Biggs, until he entered the United States Army and is now in the Engineering
Corps; Mayo H. is a corporal in the Aviation Service in Florida; Myrtle B. is
the wife of Arthur N. Dunlap, and the mother of a son, Arthur N. Jr.; and Hazel
L., who lives at home. Mr. Boulware died on the home
ranch in 1915, aged fifty-five years. Mrs. Boulware
is a Republican in politics.
