MRS. ANNA E. BITTNER
Among the various enterprises
inaugurated and maintained by the Feather River Lumber Company at Delleker, is
the Delleker Inn, which is conducted for the particular use of the employees
and officers of the company. The success
of this hotel may be credited to Mrs. Anna E. Bittner, who has proved in every
way qualified for the position which she holds as manager, as is abundantly
evidenced by her popularity with the patrons of the hostelry. She was born in Butte County, this state, and
is a daughter of John and Elizabeth Davis, both of whom were natives of
Pennsylvania, from which state they were brought to California in childhood by
their respective parents. They were
married in Butte County and in the course of time Mr. Davis became a successful
farmer and stockman, his place being located above Hurleton, near
Forbestown. He died at the age of about
sixty years, and is survived by his widow, who now lives with a daughter in San
Jose, California, and is seventy-four years of age.
Of the five children born to Mr. and
Mrs. Davis, Anna E. is the eldest. She
attended the public schools of Butte County, and at Oroville she was married to
George Matthews. They had two
children: Zelma, who is the wife of
Harold Patterson, an automobile mechanic in Sacramento, and is the mother of
one child, Georgia; and Cleon, who operates a garage at Oroville, and who
married Miss Gertrude McNulty. Mrs.
Matthews obtained a legal separation from Mr. Matthews and subsequently became
the wife of Ernest Bittner, from whom she is also divorced.
About eight years ago Mrs. Bittner
came to Delleker to assume her present position and has devoted her attention
closely to the management of the hotel.
The Delleker contains forty rooms, none of which are ever vacant, and
Mrs. Bittner, with the assistance of one helper, manages the entire place, and
does it well. Cleanliness and sanitation
receive particular attention and no one has had occasion to find fault with the
operation of the inn since she took charge.
On the other hand, her evident desire to make the place what it should
be, a real home for those who live in it, is appreciated by them, and Mrs.
Bittner is correspondingly popular and well liked. She is a member of the Order of the Eastern
Star at Beckwith and of the Foresters.
