MARK J. BENNETT

MARK J. BENNETT.--Among those who, by industry and careful attention to details, have won merited recognition in the agricultural life of Butte County, is Mark J. Bennett, son of the late James Nelson Bennett, of whom extended mention is made on another page of this work.  Mark J. was born near Cana, Butte County, and was brought up on his father’s ranch and was educated in the public schools and at the Stockton Business College, after which he returned to the home ranch and continued working with his father and brothers until his father’s death in 1905.  He then leased the Bennett Ranch, together with his brother Jesse, and they carried on operations for three years.  They raised grain on the fifteen hundred acres, using eight eight-horse and mule teams to plant and garner their crops, with the aid of a combined harvester.  They raised quite a number of stock cattle, which added to their annual income.  When the partnership was dissolved, Mark J. located on his present quarter section of land, two and one-half miles northeast of  Nord, and on this, together with two hundred acres that he leases he is engaged in raising good crops of grain, having one hundred fifty acres planted each year.  Besides this he gives considerable attention to raising cattle and hogs.

Mark J. Bennett was married, at Red Bluff, to Miss Maude Thompson, who was born in Indian Territory.  Their happy home is brightened by two children, Merrill and Wayne.  Mr. Bennett is a Republican in his political affiliations; he is highly respected for his industry and integrity.
