DANIEL LABAN BEEBE
Daniel Laban
Beebe, a widely known journalist of high standing, who is editor of the
Mercury-Register of Oroville, is a native of Illinois. Born in Kankakee, January 27, 1887, he is the
son of Almon Mellon and Louise Jane Beebe, the latter
of Quaker stock. In the paternal line he
is of Welsh lineage, representing a family that was established in America many
years ago by two brothers, of whom all Beebes in this
country are supposed to be descendants.
In the public schools of his native
city Daniel L. Beebe acquired his early education and his advanced studies were
pursued in Earlham College, at Richmond, Ind., which he entered in 1906,
completing his course in 1910, when the Bachelor of Arts degree was conferred
upon him. In the year of his graduation
he made his initial step in the newspaper business, accepting a position with
the Richmond Morning News, and next worked for the Richmond Item. Later he spent two years with the
Indianapolis News and then became an employe in the
Chicago office of the United Press Association.
During the eight years of his connection with that association he held
the following positions: manager of the
bureau at Springfield, Illinois; manager of the Indianapolis bureau for three
years; manager of the Cleveland division; editor of the United Red Letter in
New York; correspondent with the Washington (D. C.) bureau of the United Press;
assistant business manager of the Chicago division; manager of the bureau in
Portland, Oregon; and western division manager, with headquarters in San Francisco. In 1921 he resigned that important office to
become associated with the News-Herald of Modesto, California, continuing with
that paper for six years, at the end of which time he sold his holdings
therein. In 1927 he removed to Oroville,
where he became publisher of the new Mercury-Register, a consolidation of the
two old, established papers in the town.
It embodies the most progressive ideas of modern journalism and has a
wide circulation. The Mercury-Register
is an independent paper and a strong advocate of moral interests, fair dealing
and the cause of good government.
In 1914, Mr. Beebe was married in
Springfield, Illinois, to Miss Lucy Stacy, whose demise occurred in Portland,
Oregon, in 1918. He was married in San
Francisco to Miss Helena Geving, of Bellingham,
Washington, on July 26, 1920. He has a
son, Daniel Laban, Jr., who was born in Indianapolis,
in 1915, and a daughter, Alice-Mae, born in Modesto in 1922. In religious faith Mr. Beebe is a
Presbyterian and in politics he is a republican. He belongs to the Rotary Club, of which he is
a past president, the Canyon Club and the Oroville Country Club, while his
fraternal affiliations are with the Elks and Masonic lodges. He loses no opportunity to advance his
community by the spoken and written word and has made his paper an effective
exponent of local interests.
