GEORGE W. LUCOT
George
W. Lucot, the present county sheriff, is a representative of one of the oldest
families of Amador County. His
grandparents arrived in Sacramento about 1852 and there the grandfather established
a cabinet-making shop at about the center of what is now the business
district. After a few years they moved
to Volcano. Their son Eugene, father of
George W., was reared at the latter place, and became a blacksmith by
trade. He also served as constable of
that place. He married Miss Mary
McCreevy, who was born in Volcano, where her folks settled about 1850, and she
is still a resident there. To Eugene and
Mary Lucot were born ten children, four of whom are living.
George
W. Lucot was born at Volcano, on the 11th of September, 1876, and
was there reared, receiving his education in the public schools. Following in his father’s footsteps, he
learned the blacksmith’s trade, which he followed for twenty-three years at
Volcano and Jackson. He was then elected
sheriff of Amador County, in which position he is now serving his sixteenth
year. He is in every respect well
qualified for the office which he is so capably filling.
Mr.
Lucot was united in marriage to Miss Mary McLaughlin, a native of Volcano and a
member of one of Amador county’s pioneer families, and they are the parents of
two children, Arthur and Mary. Mr. Lucot
is a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, in which he has received the royal
arch degree; the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Native Sons of the Golden
West. He is a Democrat in his political
views and has served four years as city trustee of Jackson. He is progressive and alert and is loyal in
citizenship, standing consistently for those things which make for the good of
society, and is one of Jackson’s most popular citizens.
