CARLOS
GREENLEAF WHITE
Carlos
Greenleaf White (deceased), attorney, was born December 11, 1878, in San
Francisco, California, the son of Carlos and Annie Ella (Brown) White.
After attending the public schools
in Oakland, California, he spent three and one-half years as an apprentice in
the printing business, 1894-97; then attended high school in Oakland, 1900.
Graduated from University of California in 1904 with the A.B. degree and then
completed the law course there and received his J.D. degree in 1906; admitted
to the California State Bar on December 14, 1904, and to practice before the
Supreme Court of California and Supreme Court of the United State on April 20,
1908.
Mr. White was in practice of the law
in Oakland, California, from 1906. He served as assistant United States
Attorney, San Francisco, California, from 1907 to 1909; lecturer in law at
University of California 1909 to 1916. On March l, 1914, he formed the partnership
of Dunn, White & Aiken. Following World War II, he formed a partnership
with his son, C. Wadsworth White (Stanford ’35, Boaldt
Hall ’38) under the firm name of White & White, which continued until his
death. He was owner of The Gift House, Oakland, 1938-45; and president of
Franklin Properties, real estate, from 1942.
He held membership in the Alameda
County Bar Association, American Bar Association, American Counsel Association;
Phi Beta Kappa, and Acacia Fraternities; Masonic Order (33rd Degree,
Scottish Rite); and the following clubs: Athenian-Nile, Athens, High Twelve,
University of California Faculty, Business Men’s Garden, and Loyal Knights of
the Round Table. Republican; and Methodist.
Mr. White was co-founder of Loyal
Knights of the Round Table, an international service organization founded upon
the background of the ancient Round Table of King Arthur. He was the author of
the Code and was active in the early history and organization of the club,
furnishing many of the ideas that have since been used in all the Round Tables
throughout North America. He was also the author of the Distinctive Round Table
“Ceremony of Reception into Knighthood.”
Mr. White’s hobby was gardening and
development of new flower varieties. He took many prizes on exhibition of his
product.
On April 25, 1906 he married Verna Edgren, of Oakland, California, and had three sons: Carlos
Wadsworth, Miles Edgren and Dwain Houston.
