Biographies
DR.
KENNETH S. PITZER
Dr.
Kenneth S. Pitzer, dean of College of Chemistry,
University of California, was born in Pomona, California, on January 6, 1914.
He is the son of Russell K. and Flora (Sanborn) Pitzer.
He graduated from California
Institute of Technology in 1935 with the degree of B.S.; then from University
of California in 1937 with the degree of Ph.D. He received the American
Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry in 1943 and the Precision Scientific
Co. Award in Petroleum Chemistry in 1950.
Dr. Pitzer
was instructor of Chemistry at University of California from 1937 to 1939;
assistant professor from 1939 to 1942; associate professor from 1942 to 1945,
becoming professor in 1945, assistant dean of Letters and Science, 1947-48, and
now dean of College of Chemistry.
Also director of the Division of
Research, U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, 1949-51, while on leave from the
University.
Fellow of American Physical Society;
member of American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement
of Science, National Academy of Sciences, and the Faraday Society. He is the
author of “Selected Values of Properties of Hydrocarbons” (with others), 1947,
and also author of numerous articles in chemical journals.
Dr. Pitzer
married Jean Mosher in July of 1935 and has three children: Ann, Russell and
John.
