HENRY F. NEBAS
A successful rancher of Eden township, Alameda county, is Henry F. Nebas, who is still active and enterprising in his line of work at the ripe age of seventy-four years. Born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, September 20, 1830, he was a son of Windel Nebas, a native of the same locality. The elder man was a farmer by occupation. Deciding to immigrate he brought his family to the United States in 1840, and settling at Buffalo, N.Y., he became the owner of a farm, where he made his home until his death at the advanced age of eighty-four years, cultivating the eighty ac res which comprised his property. He had brought considerable money with him to his adopted country, the result of his labor among the scenes of the fatherland, and in his work here met with a success which numbered him among the prominent men of his community. In his political convictions he espoused the principles of the Democratic party and was active in his efforts to advance its interests. His wife, formerly Christine Fisher, a native of the same place in Germany, survived her husband some years, coming to California for her health and making her home with a daughter for ten years, when she died at the age of eighty-six. She was a devout member of the Lutheran Church. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Nebas, namely: Henry F., the subject of this review; Mary; Elizabeth; Christine; Philip; Jacob; and John, the last named dying in 1903.
Henry F. Nebas was ten years old when he left his native land and accompanied his parents to America. Until he was eighteen years old he remained on the paternal farm in New York state, and then began to learn the carpenter's trade in Buffalo. He engaged in the prosecution of his trade until 1853, in which year he came to California via the Isthmus of Panama and sought employment as a miner in Eldorado county until 1856. Not meeting with the desired success in his work as a miner, he then came to Eden township, Alameda county, and for seven years found employment on a ranch in that vicinity. He saved his earnings and for the ensuing five or six years rented ranches, after which he purchased his present property of three hundred and twenty-five acres. In time this number of acres was increased to seven hundred, two hundred of which he eventually disposed of, while he carries on general farming and stock-raising on the remainder.
In addition to his farming interests, Mr. Nebas owns several residences in Haywards(sic), and stock in oil companies, and is a stockholder in the Bank of Haywards. He has been successful in his line of work, and at the same time has won the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens by the many sterling traits of character which he has displayed in his work. In 1862 he married Mary Doody, a native of Ireland, who came to the United States when young. In his political relations Mr. Nebas is independent of party restrictions, reserving his right to cast his ballot for the man whom he considers best qualified for public office.
