JOHN McMILLAN
JOHN McMII.LAN. A citizen of enterprise and ability, John
McMillan is located at the corner of Second and Grove streets, engaged in the
work of wood turning. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland,
March 13, 1864, the son of Robert McMillan, also a native of that
country, where he earned his livelihood by the manufacture of chemicals.
John McMillan was reared and educated in his native country, remaining a
citizen of the same until attaining his twenty-fifth year. Induced by the
better opportunities to be found in the western lands as set forth by returning
immigrants and published articles, he decided then to cross the ocean and cast
his fortune with the citizens of the United States. Accordingly he took passage
for America in 1889, and came west to the Pacific coast, locating in Oakland,
where he has since been identified with the business interests. He first
engaged in business as wood turner at the corner of Third and Washington streets,
where he continued until his removal to his present place of business,
throughout the entire period of his residence here meeting with the success
which characterizes undivided effort, energy and persistence.
The marriage of Mr. McMillan, which occurred in San
Mateo, in 1891, united him with Miss Agnes Young, who is a native of
Newcastle, England. To them has been born one child, Robert. Their home is
located at No. 542 Sherman avenue. In his
political convictions Mr. McMillan has always maintained an independent
attitude, reserving the right to cast his ballot for the man whom he considers
best equipped for official position. Fraternally he is associated with the
Woodmen of the World and St. Andrews society of Oakland.
