JOSEPH
RUSSELL KNOWLAND
Joseph
Russell Knowland, president and publisher of Oakland
(California) Tribune, was born August 5, 1873, in Alameda, California; the son
of Joseph and Hannah (Bailey) Knowland.
His education was received in both
public and private schools and at the University of the Pacific.
Mr. Knowland
was a member of the California Assembly from 1898 to 1902, and the Senate from
1902 to 1904. Elected to the 58th Congress in 1904 to fill the
unexpired term, 1904-05, of Victor H. Metcalf. Resigned. He was re-elected to
the 59th to 63rd Congresses, 1905-15, from 6th
California District; Republican Nominee for United Stated Senator in 1914.
Mr. Knowland
is now president and publisher of the Oakland (California) Tribune; member of
executive committee of American Trust Company; director of Kennedy Mining &
Milling Company; and president of Franklin Investment Company.
Director of
California State Chamber of Commerce; director of California State Automobile
Association; and chairman of California State Park Commission. Author of
“California, a Landmark History.”
