SENATOR WILLIAM FIFE KNOWLAND
William Fife Knowland, United States Senator, was born in Alameda, California, on June 26, 1908; the son of Joseph Russell and Ellie (Fife) Knowland.
Graduated from the University of California in 1929 with the degree of A.B.
Senator Knowland has been assistant publisher of the Oakland (California) Tribune since 1933. He was a member of the California State Assembly from 1933 to 1935 and senator from 1935 to 1939. Member of the Republican National Committee of California from 1938 to 1942; chairman of Republican Executive Committee from 1941 to 1942. Appointed United States Senator by governor Earl Warren in 1945; and elected to a full six-year term on November 5, 1946. On June 3, 1952 he won both the Republican and Democratic nominations from re-election with a total vote of 2,119,597. His Republican majority was 1,356,361 and his Democratic majority was 322,102.
During World War II Senator Knowland served in the United States Army, as an enlisted man and officer, in England, France, Belgium and Germany.
Member of Zeta Psi and Sigma Delta Chi Fraternities; Republican; Mason and Shriner; belongs to the Methodist Church; and is a member of Native Sons of the Golden West, Eagles, Elks, Moose; Athenian-Nile Club, and Athens Athletic Club, both of Oakland, California.
On December 31, 1926, Senator Knowland married Helen Davis Herrick and they have three children: (Mrs.) Emelyn Davis Jewitt, Joseph William and Helen Estelle. There is in Piedmont, California, at 100 Guilford Road.
