Biographies
JAMES H. GILLARD
James H. Gillard, attorney, is the son of James and Sylvia R. (Brown)
Gillard. He was born August 12, 1884, in Sandusky, Ohio.
After attending the public grade and high
schools of Sandusky, Ohio,
he studied one year at the Ohio State University
at Columbus. Received his legal education at University of Michigan Law
Department, 1908. Removed to California
in 1910 and was admitted to the California State Bar in 1913.
Mr. Gillard
began law practice in Oakland,
California, in association with
Judge J. J. Jerome and continued in his offices for three years; then
associated with John C. Scott for one year. In 1918 he became
associated with Earl D. White (now deceased) and Judge Edward J. Tyrrell.
He now has associated with him in practice Philip J. Doyle, an
ex-Marine of the second World War, who graduated from Boalt Hall in 1946, a very promising young lawyer with
great initiative and prospects for a great future in law.
Member of
Alameda County Bar Association; State Bar of California; American Bar
Association; Aahmes Temple of the Mystic Shrine; and
Scottish Rite, Oakland, California.
Mr. Gillard
married Edna I. Smith of Sandusky,
Ohio, on June 10, 1908. Children:
Dorothy, born in 1909, now head of personnel department of Wells Fargo Bank and
Union Trust Company, San Francisco; Captain Lynn J. Gillard, born in
1911, graduate of University of California Law School; admitted to practice in
California on October 21, 1936; served during second World War in Judge
Advocate General’s Department in charge of the prosecution of the torturers of
the Doolittle Flyers at Shanghai, China, presently connected with the office of
the Public Utility Commission of the State of California; and Ruth E.,
born in 1913, graduate of Mills College; Professor at Bard College, New York,
on temporary leave of absence being assigned to special work in the office of
the Secretary of State of the United States.
