JOSEPH JOHN CONEY

 

 

Joseph John Coney, steamship owner and operator, was born in San Francisco, California, on April 1, 1895, the son of Alexander K. and Marguerite (Falvey) Coney. He was a student at the California School of Mechanical Arts, San Francisco, 1907 to 1911.

            Mr. Coney was assistant naval architect for Bethlehem Shipbuilding Company, San Francisco, from 1917 to 1918; naval architect for Western Pipe & Steel Company, South San Francisco, 1918 to 1920, and for Union Construction Company, Oakland, California, from 1920 to 1924; president of Pacific Coast Engineering Company, Oakland, California, 1924 to 1929.

            Mr. Coney is president of Hillcone Steamship Company, San Francisco; president of Gold Hill Dredging Company; president of Maritime Transportation Company, S.A.; vice president of Alameda South Shore Land Company; and a member of the Board of Directors of Hiller Helicopters, Inc. He is a member of the American Bureau of Shipping, American Petroleum Institute, American Society of International Law, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, American Merchant Marine Institute, Pacific American Tankship Association (president), and Propeller Club of San Francisco (director).

            He is also a member of the American Shorthorn Breeders’ Association, Arabian Horse Club Registry of America, and the following clubs: Bohemian, Commercial, Orinda Country, Claremont Country, and Jonathan (California); Whitehall and Metropolitan (New York City).

            His wife is the former Ilse Vockel, and they have two children, Patricia Allayne and Robert Lee. Their home is in Berkeley, California, at 117 Southhampton Ave.
