JNO. U. CALKINS, JR.

 

 

            Jno. U. Calkins, Jr., attorney, was born in San Francisco, California, on April 26, 1889.  The son of Jno. U. and Harriet (Bates) Calkins.

            After attending the public schools in Berkeley, California, he entered the University of California, from which he received the B.L. degree in 1911 and the J.D. degree in 1913.

            Mr. Calkins was admitted to the California State Bar in 1913 and began law practice in Oakland in association with Ezra W. Decoto, thus establishing the firm of Decoto and Calkins, which continued until 1922.  Since then he has been senior partner in the firm of Calkins, Hall, Linforth & Conard, San Francisco.

            From 1916 to 1917 Mr. Calkins served as assistant city attorney of Oakland; assistant district attorney of Alameda County, California, from 1919 to 1922; former member of the California Crime commission, 1926-27; attorney for The Regents of the University of California since 1924.

            During World War I he served with the Army, 1917 to 1919, and with the National Guard in 1920.  In World War II he was on active duty, 1941 to 1946, and was promoted to Major General, commanding the 49th Division, National Guard of the United States and California.

            Mr. Calkins is a member of the American Bar Association, California State Bar and San Francisco Bar Association; Commonwealth and Bohemian Clubs, both of San Francisco; Phi Kappa Sigma (academic), Phi Delta Phi (legal) fraternities, and Order of the Coif (honorary legal).  He is greatly interested in National Guard affairs; finds relaxation in writing and also law teaching.

            In 1916 he married Deborah Dyer.  In 1933 he married (2d) Sally Dougherty.  Children:  Jno. U. III; Deborah H.; and Sally Jane.  The family home is 164 Vicente Road, Berkeley, California.
