DR. JOHN F. MORSE

No man has ever died in California leaving a larger circle of warmly-attached personal friends than Dr. John F. MORSE, whose death occurred in San Francisco on the 30^th ultimo.

Dr. MORSE was born in Vermont in 1816. He was educated for a physician, and pursed his medical studies with ardor and enthusiasm which characterized him in all his undertakings. His profession was ever his pride and his delight. He loved it for the opportunities for good to others which it afforded, and which he never neglected to improve; and for the knowledge it conferred on the most interesting and mysterious questions of natural science. Few men have had a larger or more laborious practice, but he continued a student to the time of his death, and he leaves no one in the State more thoroughly and familiarly acquainted with medical literature and science, their history, researches and latest results. Latterly, he was especially interested in all investigations into the subtle relations between material and mental phenomena. He came to California from Brooklyn (where he was a charter member of Plymouth Church) in 1849, arriving on the ship Humboldt, on which he acted as surgeon from Acapulco to San Francisco, and immediately settled in Sacramento. In the fall of that year, in connection with Dr. STILLMAN, he opened a hospital at the corner of K and Third streets, on the lot now occupied by NATHAN’s clothing store. It is impossible for those who were not here to realize, or even for those who were to recall, the professional labors performed and gratuitous services rendered by Dr. MORSE in the Spring of 1850, when the city was inundated; in the Summer, when it was filled with immigrants, often sick and destitute, and in the Fall, when it was scourged by the cholera. His constitution, not naturally robust, was impaired by constant labor and frequent exposure, and when the Sacramento Union was projected, in March 1851, he was offered a position of editor, which he accepted, and held for about a year. Resuming his profession he continued in active practice in this city until 1863, when he removed to San Francisco. His practice was at all time large, generally limited only by his own strength. In the sick room he was one of the kindest and most sympathetic of men, and each of his patients seemed to be the object of as much care and solicitude as though he had but one. He was also a men of great public spirit, taking a lively interest in every question which affected the community, the State, and the nation. With unusual fluence of speech, and a rapid, impetuous delivery, he was very often called upon for addresses on public occasions, and he became widely known through the State. He was one of the leading Odd Fellows on the Pacific coast, and during the visit to Germany in 1870 he introduced the order into that empire. He spent a great portion of the last five years of his life in traveling on account of failing health. He had uniformly found a sea-voyage beneficial, and about two months ago took passage for Australia. His friends were apprehensive his strength was not sufficient for the journey, and they were right. He went no further than the Hawaiian Islands, and returning reached home a few days before his death. The peculiar and most marked characteristics of his mind and disposition were an ardor that was impulsive, and a devotion that was heroic. The friends that he loved “he grappled with hooks of steel,” and he followed his convictions wherever they led. If tender regrets, kind memories, and grateful recollections could build his monument, no man’s would rise higher.

GONE TO FINAL REST
Hundreds of people attended the funeral of John DOMINGOS, a pioneer citizen and 
former Supervisor, held yesterday forenoon in the Masonic Temple. The Blue Room, 
the Commandery Room and the lobbies were packed. The funeral services were conducted 
by officers of Tehama Lodge No. 3, F. and A.M. Representatives of the following Orders, 
of which deceased had been a member, were present: Royal Arch Masons; Sacramento Lodge, 
No 2, I.O.O.F; Pacific Encampment, No.2, I.O.O.F; Veteran Odd Fellows; Red Jacket Tribe 
No. 28, Improved Order of Red Men: Exempt Firemen; Druids; Knights of Pythias; Chapter 
of the Order of Eastern Star No. 196; Wenonah Degree of Pocahontas and the local 
Teosophical Society.
 
There were many beautiful floral tributes about the coffin. The remains were sent to 
San Francisco in the afternoon for interment. The pall-bearers at the funeral were: -

The remains of Joseph MENDIS, son of Captain A. MENDIS of this city, were laid to 
rest yesterday afternoon in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Deceased was a native of this city, but 
had resided in San Francisco for several years. The funeral took place from the 
undertaking establishment of W.F. GORMLEY. Religious services were held in the Cathedral 
by Rev. John F. QUINN. The pallbearers were J.D. MOYNAHAN, Fred CUTTING, 
Joseph SANTOS, Edward GLATZ, John CAREY and W. WHALEN.
 
 
The funeral of William McDERMOTT took place yesterday morning from the 
undertaking establishment of W.F. GORMLEY. Rev. Father BRADY conducted the services 
at the Cathedral, which were attended by a large number. The pallbearers were Al. 
VAUGHN, H.A. MOYNAHAN, H. LARSEN, and C.W. TAYLOR. The interment took place 
in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
 
 
DEATH OF A REMARKABLE WOMAN
Mrs. Lucinda McCORMICK DEARTH, an old resident of this county, died on February 1st, 
at the home of her granddaughter, near Michigan Bar. She was the mother of Mrs. M.S. 
LOWE of Michigan Bar, John E. DEARTH of Cosumnes, and Mrs. M.E. PALMER of 
Astoria, Ill. She was 92 years of age, and a native of Fayette County, Pennsylvania. She 
survived her husband seventeen years, and was buried beside him in the Michigan Bar 
Cemetery. She was always a leading member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
 
She was the mother of four children, three of whom survive her, eleven grandchildren, 
thirty-four great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

FUNERAL OF GEORGE BEELER
 
The funeral of George Beeler, the pioneer who died suddenly in this city Sunday, was 
held Tuesday afternoon from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Albert Kunz, 400 O 
Street. Interment was in the city cemetery, the services being conducted by Rev. C. F. 
Ochler. The pall-bearers were: For the family, C. W. Farnsworth and James Cochran; for 
the A.O.U. W., James Popert and H. I. Norton. Music was furnished by Mrs. J. H. 
Coppersmith and Mrs. R. H. Hawley.

BERNARD MARTY DIES SUDDENLY ON RIVER BOAT
 
Bernardin Marty, a prominent old resident of Sacramento County, dropped dead this morning 
at the Monument Ranch of the Martys, just after he had stepped on the boat which was to 
bring him to this city to spend the holidays with his sons. 
 
He was eighty-three years old and a native of Switzerland, where he leaves two children.
 
For years he had resided in Sacramento County, where he leaves four sons, Antone, 
Benjamin, Joseph and Martin Marty.

Joseph Marty, the well-known dairyman on the lower Stockton Road, a short distance south 
of this city, died at his residence at three o'clock yesterday afternoon, aged 55 years. Mr. 
Marty was a native of Switzerland and came to Sacramento thirty years ago. He was a 
member of Tehama Lodge of Masons, Phoenix Lodge of Odd Fellows and the 
Sacramento Helvetia Verein. He leaves a widow and one son, Joseph R. Marty. Funeral will 
be held tomorrow at two o'clock.

The funeral of Mrs. Martin Marty of 300 N. Street, whose death occurred at Colfax

high mass will be celebrated. Mrs. Marty left her home here seven months ago for a stay 
at Colfax in an endeavor to benefit her health, but became worse, until death came 
Wednesday. She was 30 years old.
 
Mrs. Marty leaves her husband, two daughters, Marguerite and Katherine, her parents, Mr. 
and Mrs. B. Mente, two brothers, Victor Mente of Fairbanks, Alaska and Joseph Mente 
of Sacramento; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Hunt of Valdez, Alaska.

Jacob Schultz 1915

Surnames: Schultz, Zornig, Schmidt

Jacob Schultz, an aged and respected citizen of Sacramento County, died suddenly Monday (25 January 1915) afternoon at his home near Franklin. Mr. Schultz came to Sacramento by way of the Isthmus in 1869 and for many years was engaged in the brick business in this city. In 1883 he married Elisabeth Zornig and soon after settled on the ranch where he lived until his death.

Mrs. H.B. Schmidt.

The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon from the Evangelical Association church. Interment will be in the cemetery near his home.

Ettje Schmidt 1914

Surnames: Schmidt, Buscher

Mrs. Ettje Schmidt, wife of Berend Schmidt, residing near Franklin, Cal., died Sunday night, October 11 (1914) aged 75. Four about four years she was unable to walk being paralyzed, and had to be attended to like a child, but she was always contented and trusted in God. Mrs. Schmidt was a native of Germany and the mother of five children, who are all married and live in the same neighborhood where she lived and died. They are Christoffer, John and Henry Schmidt and Mrs. Christoffer and Mrs. Henry Buscher. Her husband, two brothers and one sister in Germany; her five children with 32 grandchildren and many relatives and friends, are the survivors.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon from the residence to the Evangelical church of which she was a member, thence to the cemetery of the church. The following ministers took part in the services: Rev. A.A. Boschee, the pastor who preached the funeral sermon, Rev. G.G. Schmid of Sacramento who spoke in English and Rev. F.T. Harder, her former pastor of Sacramento. The funeral was largely attended.

Donner Party Members Die Same Day

Surnames: Lewis, Wilder, Donner, App, Reed

The hand of death, by strange coincidence, fell yesterday at about the same time upon two of the few remaining figures of one of California's most stirring historical episodes.

While the news was being received of the death of Mrs. Martha Reed Lewis, survivor of the Donner party, at her home at East Twin Lakes, Santa Cruz Co., a fellow member of that ill-fated party was breathing her last in her home at Elk Grove.

The second survivor to die within twenty-four hours was Mrs.

Elitha C. Wilder, daughter of Robert Donner.

She was a friend of Mrs. Lewis, but because of her weakened condition could

not be informed that the ranks of those who remembered the terrible journey in

1846 had shrunk again.

Mrs. Lewis was 87 years old and Mrs. Wilder was 91.

Mrs. Wilder is not only famous because she is the daughter of the leader of the

Donner party, but because of her part in the early history of California.

She came to Elk Grove shortly after the living members of the party were

rescued from the snow bound shores of Donner Lake, and has lived there for

the past 50 years.

Mrs. Leanan App, a sister of Mrs. Wilder, makes her home in Jamestown. She is

one of the few known survivors of the party who is still living.

Harvey Thompkins 1915

Surnames: Thompkins, Walthers, Stratton, Henderson

Harvey Wallace Thompkins, perhaps the best known motorcyclist in Sacramento, died in Nevada City 18 July 1915. He had gone there a week ago on account of his health, but his friends did not realize how ill he was. Pneumonia set in as a result of an injury received some time ago.
Until recently he was employed at the Banta Cyclery on Eleventh street and was popular among motorcyclists. He made a record in Sacramento of 20 miles in 18 minutes and 45 seconds. He had also figured in other races in different parts of the state.
Eight months ago he was married to Miss Hazel Walthers of Sacramento and the young people had made their home here.
Besides his young wife he leaves to mourn his untimely death three brothers, Bert, Walter and Orrin Tompkins and one sister, Mrs. Millicent Stratton all of this city. He was the grandson of Mrs. Rafella Henderson.
The funeral was held yesterday in Nevada City, where he was laid to rest beside his mother and father.

Fall From Horse Kills J.A. Wilder

5 June 1919 - James Allen Wilder, 57, pioneer resident of Elk Grove died Thursday morning at the White Hospital, following a fall from a horse Wednesday, in which his skull was fractured. Wilder is the son of Mrs. Elitha C. and the late B.W. Wilder. His mother was a member of the Donner party, and is now in her 88th year. The other surviving relatives are the widow Mrs. Ora Wilder, two daughters, Alice and Susie, a son Benjamin and two sisters Olive A. Wilder of Elk Grove and Mrs. E.E. Walther of Sacramento. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Elk Grove Masonic Cemetery.

Harry Kunsting – 1920

Harry Kunsting of Franklin died of pheumonia Tuesday (10 February 1920) in Sacramento. He was the brother of Anton Hoffknecht of Merced and was adopted by the late M. Kunsting of Franklin. He was a native of Germany, aged 32 years and 5 months. Harry was of a happy disposition and a likeable fellow and had many friends who will miss him. Funeral Friday, private. W.F. Barbara Strobel – 1914

The funeral of Mrs. Barbara Strobel, who died yesterday (30 December 1914) at her home, 1928 L street, will be held tomorrow at 2:30 and will be strictly private.
Mrs. Strobel came to California 35 years ago from Bavaria, Germany. Her late husband preceded her here and in the year of 1879 she joined him here, where they were married. They resided on a farm in Franklin, a few miles from Sacramento, and there three children were born, Emma, Laura and Minnie. They lived there for seven years until 1887, when they moved to this city, into the home where she just recently passed away.
Mr. Strobel died 26 years ago in 1888 a year after they moved to this city, and Mrs. Strobel with her daughters have kept their same residence.
Mrs. Strobel was very well known and has made a host of friends during her long residence here who are sorry to know that she has left their midst. She leaves three daughters, now orphans and all unmarried. She was long a member of the German Lutheran church, and Rev. Charles F. Oehler will read the departing message. Interment will be made in the City Cemetery, the funeral will be entirely private.
Mrs. Strobel is the sister of Fred Rink of this city. The pallbearers will be Messrs. A. Schaden, C. Roth, G. Wendt, W. Walker, A. Teichert and O. Hardey.

Peter Glann, 76 years old, a pioneer farmer of Bruceville and one of the wealthiest land owners in Sacramento county, was drowned in a slough on his ranch last Saturday afternoon when his horse became tangled in brush while fording the flood-swollen stream.
The accident occurred about half a mile west of the Burton Slough embankment of the Lower Stockton road. Mr. Glann and Mr. Ehrhardt were driving out a bunch of horses, the latter being in the lead. What happened will never be known, but the first intimation Mr. Ehrhardt had that anything was wrong was when he saw Mr. Glann's horse coming along riderless.
All day Sunday and Monday 50 to 100 men were engaged in dragging for the body, and it was not until Tuesday morning that success attended their efforts. The body was found out on the plains land a short distance from the slough where it was supposed to repose. There are many theories as to how the body got where it was found. A plausible one is that Mr. Glann held on to the bridle and the horse dragged him a distance until the hold was broken.
All of the residents of Franklin and Bruceville districts, many from Elk Grove and other parts were in the rescue party.
Deceased was a native of Ohio aged 77 years. He leaves one brother, David Glann of Ohio and a sister Mrs. Catherine Upton of Elk Grove, a sister-in-law Mrs. Anna Glann of Glannvale. He was a brother of the late Henry, Vincent, Daniel and James Glann.
Peter Glann was one of the early pioneers of Sacramento county. He was one of the largest and wealthiest land owners in the county. He always took an active interest in political affairs and was a man of much influence among those who knew him.
Deceased was a member of the Elk Grove Masonic Lodge, under the auspices of which he was buried. The funeral was held this morning from the mortuary chapel of Miller & Skelton in Sacramento and thence to Franklin where graveside services were held.

Betty Anderson

Circa 1915
Death has removed from this community another of the pioneer women of this county. Mrs. Betty Ellen Anderson, widow of the late James W. Anderson died at the family residence at Old Elk Grove Friday noon. Mrs. Anderson was one of the best known women in the county. She was married in February, 1855, having come across the plains by ox team in 1852. She was in her 82nd year. Mrs. Anderson possessed an admirable character and gentle disposition. She went through life without making an enemy, leaving to her children a legacy more precious than gold. The funeral, which was private, was held Sunday from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. E.B. Hogaboom at Old Elk Grove. She leaves one son James W. Anderson of Elk Grove and three daughters, Mrs. E.B. Hogaboom of Elk Grove, Mrs. F.F. Thompson of Sacramento and Mrs. L.R. Beckley of Courtland.

Henry Hoertling – 1921

The burial of Henry Hoertling, rancher near Franklin, who died Sunday (12 June 1921) took place at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Services were held at the Franklin church after which the body was laid to rest in the Franklin cemetery. The services and interment were under the supervision of Armstrong and Bader funeral directors of this city.
Hoertling had been ranching near Franklin for the last four or five years. Previous to his death he had been under a doctors care for apoplexy. Apoplexy was the cause of his death.
Surviving him is his widow, Katy Hoertling and his children, Mrs Emma Eschinger, Karn, Phillip and Elmer Hoertling. He was 58 years of age and a native of Germany.

William Schmidt Killed – 1925

Henry Schmidt, rancher of the Franklin district, killed his brother William Schmidt, yesterday (10 December 1925) with a shotgun in a sudden fit of insanity and was overpowered by County Traffic Officer Edward Schmidt, another brother whose life he had threatened, only after a desperate struggle. "The world's coming to an end and I'll get everyone of you before it does." shouted the insane man as he reached the home of his brother, William.
William emerged from the front door and Henry leveled his gun and fired. The shot struck William in the head and he died instantly. The third brother, Edward came from the house when he heard the shot. Henry walked up to him and placed the muzzle of the shotgun against his breast and said he intended to kill him too. The the struggle for possession of the weapon took place. Edward succeeded in getting the gun. The murderer then ran to his own house and got another shotgun. He returned to his brother's home but the shells he had were of a larger gauge than the second and he was unable to carry out his threat. Constable Schoech of Franklin arrived and disarmed Schmidt for the second time and handcuffed him. Sheriff Ellis Jones and Deputies Harry Bryant and Charles Wearn brought Schmidt in. The funeral of William Schmidt will be this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home in Franklin. Interment will be in the Franklin Cemetery.

Cable Breaks; Man Injured

Henry Steinmeyer, a machinist, was severely injured on the new Southern Pacific bridge across the Sacramento River this morning, when a cable broke, dropping an 800-pound cog among the workmen on the bridge.
Steinmeyer, with others, tried to dodge the piece of falling machinery but was not quick enough to get his body entirely clear. Several workmen narrowly escaped and several were nearly hurled into the river.
The patrol wagon was rushed to the scene of the accident and Steinmeyer was taken to the Wentworth Hospital which is now being used as a railroad hospital. He was found to be suffering from internal injuries, and was badly bruised about the body.

Louis J. Nicholaus of Bruceville died at the White hospital Wednesday evening the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a member of the board of directors of the Sacramento Valley Bank and Trust company and was a prominent member of the Elks. He is survived by a wife and three daughters, Edna, Gladys and Vera Nicholaus. The body is at the home of Miller & Skelton, 1400 K Street. Funeral arrangements have not been made.

Annie Klaeser – 1921

Annie G. Klaeser died at her home, 1611 28th Street, Friday at the age of 68 years. She was a native of Germany.
Surviving her is her husband, William Klaeser, her sisters, Mrs. Katie Glie, Mrs. Mary M. Siller and her sons, Harry L. Julius J., Eckman and John Behr and her grandchildren Elmer A. and Fred W. Steinmeyer. Funeral services will probably take place 2 p.m. Monday in the Evangelical church with the interment in the City Cemetery. They will be under the supervision of Harry Nauman and Son.

Andrew Johnson – 1921

22 July 1921 -
Rancher Takes Own Life

Andrew Johnson, 62, wealthy rancher with holdings near Franklin, Sacramento county, comitted suicide early Thursday morning according to a report received from the local coroner's office. Johnson, said to be in the throes of a nervous breakdown caused by worries over business difficulties, tied a rifle to a post, tied a string to the trigger and shot himself.
The rancher was popular in his locality and was considered a "high type man." Johnson was a native of Norway. He leaves a wife and 10 children.

Mary Nicolaus - 3 March 1922 - Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Mary Nicolaus are pending. Arthur D. Fenton, funeral director has charge of the body. Mrs. Nicolaus succumbed at her home, 2201 P Street, Thursday. She was born in Germany 85 years ago. She was the widow of the late George Nicolaus and the mother of G.W., J.H., Lillian and the late Mrs. Elizabeth Williams.

Pauline Wolff – 1921

Elk Grove - 10 September 1921 -
The remains of Pauline Wolff will be laid to rest in the Masonic cemetery in Elk Grove Tuesday following services in the Presbyerian church at 2 p.m. The body lies now at the funeral parlors of Armstrong & Bader, directors in this city, for friends to visit.
Mrs. Wolff was a resident of Elk Grove, with her husband John Wolff. She was brought to the White hospital here suffering with cancer. The occurrence of her death Saturday was the culmination of a long illness. She was aged 52 years and a native of Russia. Surviving her is her husband and the following children, Lydia, Gottlieb, Martha and Otelia Wolff.

Anthone Dutra Dies After Long Illness

Anthone Dutra, 58, died yesterday in his home at 2117 E Street following a long illness.

Dutra, a life-long resident of this vicinity, was born at Freeport. He was a real estate broker and had been an active member of the local Portuguese colony.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge and of two Portuguese lodges, the I.D.E.S. and U.P.E.C. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Cippa & Nicoletti at 9 A.M. Monday and in the Saint Francis Church at 10 A.M.

He was the husband of Mrs. Wilhelmina A. Dutra, the father of Anthony, Frank, Marcel and Edna Dutra, and the brother of Marian Goulard, Mrs. Rose Rico and Mary Dutra, all of Sacramento.

Anna Kaminsky, Mother of Police Officer, is Dead

Requiem Mass Will Be Said Monday; Interment Will Be Private

Mrs. Anna Kaminsky died this morning in a private sanitarium at 1932 Bidwell Way. She was 85 years of age and had lived in Sacramento fifty seven years.

She was the mother of Police Inspector Fritz Kaminsky, Police Officer George Kaminsky and Julius Kaminsky, the owner of Capital Radiator and Fender Shop.

Other surviving children include three daughters, Mrs. A. Dutra, with whom she had been living at 2117 E Street; Mrs. W.J. Hunt and Mrs. L.B. Stober, all of Sacramento.

Mrs. Kaminsky was a member of the Cathedral Altar Society.

The rosary will be recited tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the George L. Klumpp Chapel.

A requiem mass will be said at 9:30 A.M. Monday in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. The interment will be private.
