MRS. SARAH LUELLA HARRITT

 

 

            Mrs. S. L. Harritt is well known as president of the Pioneer Society of San Diego County, of which she has been at the head for the past nine years.  She is a daughter of Joseph and Sarah M. (Robison) Farley, the former an honored California Pioneer.  Joseph Farley first came to this state in 1851, but subsequently returned east and served in the Civil War as a member of Company I, Thirteenth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, being disabled as a result of wounds received in battle.  In 1864 he again journeyed westward to California and became interested in the Julian Mining District as one of the partners in the famous Stonewall Mine at Julian.  He died in San Diego when seventy-five years of age.

            It was in 1875 that Sarah Luella Farley became the wife of Frank Harritt, who passed away in 1913, and seven of their nine children survive.  (1) Chester Harritt, now superintendent of the La Mesa, Lemongrove & Spring Valley Water Company, resides at La Mesa, California, is married and has a son.  (2)  Mrs. Jesse H. McLean is the mother of three children.  (3) Joseph Alfred Harritt, better known as Fred, is superintendent of the gas production with the San Diego Consolidated Gas Company.  He was presented with a gold medal for the best endeavor of the year 1932 for his work in the connection with the use of natural gas.  He resides at 1512 Grove Street in San Diego, is married and has a fine family of seven children.  (4) Mrs. Luella F. Muscio is a teacher residing in Santa Maria, California.  (5) Wallace W. Harritt is a mining engineer of  Northern California.  (6)  Mrs. Charlotte M. Maples is a resident of San Diego.  (7) Mrs. Irma H. Howell also makes her home in San Diego.  The mother of the above named has fourteen living grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

            Mrs. Harritt lived as a real pioneer in the Julian Mining District for a number of years.  Aside from rearing a large family of children she has always manifested an active and helpful interest in community affairs and as a woman of marked literary ability has written on various subjects being also the author of some excellent verse.  Moreover, she is a talented musician and for years played the organ in the Baptist Church at Julian.  As state above, she has served as president of the Pioneer Society of San Diego County for the past nine years, and her name is also on the membership rolls of the Bungalow Society, the Mothers Club, the Rebekahs and the Women’s Relief Corps of Heintzelman Post, Grand Army of the Republic (G. A. R).  She likewise belongs to the San Diego Historical Society and the Junta De Las Amigas Historical Society.  Mrs. Harritt is loved by all who know her and delights in entertaining her many friends in her attractive home at 4121 Illinois Street, San Diego.
