WILLIAM CURRIER ATKINSON

 

 

     William Currier Atkinson (Col.), president of Army and Navy Academy at Carlsbad, California, was born May 22, 1899, at Maxwell, Tennessee.  He is the son of William Sherrill and Stella Vaughan Atkinson.

     He received his education at the Sewanee Military Academy, Sewanee, Tennessee and at the University of the South.

     From 1919 to 1921 he was an instructor at Greenbier Military Academy; from 1921 to 1924 he taught at Castle Heights Military Academy and in the fall of 1924 he became identified with Army and Navy Academy as an instructor. In 1943 he was appointed president of Army and Navy Academy having served the institution in many fields.

     He is Protestant; member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity; and a member of Kiwanis.

     On January 25, 1919 Colonel Atkinson married Virginia Lucile Powell, who worked at his side for 33 years as instructor of Speech Arts and Drama director at the academies where he taught.  Mrs. Atkinson passed away on December 25, 1951 after a very short illness.  Two sons were left to share the sorrow of her husband, William Currier, Jr. and James Douglas.
